St Paul's Ground Zero 2009

yesterday
on a gorgeous, cold but sunny afternoon
i took a walk,
i walked east to the river and then all the way down to south street seaport
from there i headed west and found myself
at ground zero
or rather the ground zero of today which, now, cleaned up and ready to rebuild
looks like a really large construction site
with a lot of tourists
until you think about what used to be there
but for me,
no matter how cleaned up
i still see it
as i did on Sept 16th 2001
in a snow storm of dust
the air so thick with white and gray powder you could eat it
if you opened your mouth, like snow, but you dared not to
because everyone knew besides the metal and the paper and the various construction materials and lord knows what else
that thousands of people were also in that dust
in the eerie horror
i found such kindness and love
strength and bravery
that to this day i know
the time in my life when i felt the most alive
and the closest to god
was then

yesterday i walked into St Paul's church
home of where we'd set up our grills and tables
to feed the crews
the many banners, children's letters and countless tributes of love
and thanks to the rescue crews were gone
replaced with slide shows and some designated areas of photo displays
honoring the podiatrists, masseuses and other great volunteers who had set up shop to help however they could

i walked thru the 2 hundred plus year old graveyard in back
and remembered in an instant how it had looked full of paper and debree
from the towers
but here it stood still
these colonial grave stones unharmed except for the ravages of two hundred years of rain and snow wearing them away

how amazing that this wondrous old church
had survived without a single broken window
with the towers right in its back yard

when i arrived to St Pauls on Sept 16th 2001
it was not about Christian or Jewish or Moslem or any relgion
it was about love, bravery and kindness

On September 19th 2001
i was part of the most miraculous moment of judaism
when an army rabbi blew the shofar for myself and several other jewish volunteers to honor the first rosh hashanah at ground zero

and so while volunteering with seaman's church who had set up the relief
tables in front of st paul's church
i wound up coming a little closer to my jewish-ness then i ever had before

yesterday i walked away from St paul's and it all came back
the smells the sounds
the impossible visions imprinted forever inside my eyes
and i walked uptown
a little slower
and little softer
only this time
i stopped to give money to the homeless man begging
and did not ignore him
as i have of late
i am ashamed to admit

we must
we must
we must remember
always to be kind

shock and lambert

Oh what is all the hooplah over Adam Lambert
I Mean yeah okay the guy did an outrageous, sexually charged
Very bi-sexual, wild ass performance
For the American music awards
But honey
When you ask American Idols numbero uno bad boy
To perform
What do you think is gonna happen?

For moi
I missed the show
But after I keyed into all the controversy I caught it on youtube
So adam wins anyway
Controversy is good for record sales

I have said it before
And will say it again
Eye-liner, spiked shoulder pads
Platform boots
And more

The dude is brilliant
So in the words of a thankfully gone
Pres bush

Shock and awe

yankee love

first of all
i'd like to apologize for not posting as often as usual
but ive been knee deep in weddings
i figure in the last few weeks ive cooked for oh about
1600 or so people
oy

also want to apologize for the spam attack on my comments
i need to get my web guru to look into it

but here's what im happy about today

the yankees

oh yeah im a new yorker
so course im happy
but you know
originally
in my first 16 years
i was a south jersey gal
yeah that's right i admit it
and south jersey loves the philies

along the lines of the asbury park territory
folks feel downright schizoid

i mean asbury is a very new york kind of jersey town
and rumson where i went to high school is chock full of manhattan ex-patriots who root for the yankees
but in jersey, there's still a divide
north jersey roots for the yankees
south jersey roots for the philies
where that divide is
i dunno
so yankee lovers in south jersey
often have to keep their yap shut

but for me loving the yankees had nothing to do with nyc

i don't know anything about baseball really
find the sport madly boring
find most sports madly boring
but i have a special nostalgic yen for the yankees
so much so that i dragged my best pal and significant other
and my goddaughter to some serious nose bleed seats
last year to see one of the last games at the old stadium

im allergic to wheat to i had to eat the hot dog with no bun
NOT FUN
don't like beer
don't like loud obnoxious drunken men

hated the nose bleed seats

don't think derek jeter or a-rod are sexy
wish they had some female players in baseball
but still

i love the yankees
the first baseball player i ever knew about was babe ruth
maybe the first team i ever knew about was the yankees
they just pull at my heart strings
and it doesn't have to make sense

nyc has been through a lot
but today is new york's day
the parade
the joy
the hooplah
it's all good

don't ask me what the score was
who hit
who missed
i didn't even watch the game
but
again
still love the yankees

what can i say
im a tad odd
as you know
