obama salute

caught the second half of obama's press conference last night
and again i felt inspired
he was honest
straight forward
he did not try and hide how bad things are
he did not use fear mongering like bush and cheney
to manipulate us
he just said it like it is
things suck
but he has a plan to help
and his plan
is open to suggestion and improvement if you have some to offer

i don't recall in my lifetime
a president ever doing so much in his first 60 days in office
do you?

i think the republicans who just want to sit with their arms crossed saying NO
to everything
will pay the price at the next election
this is not a time for saying NO

it's a time for saying HOW
can i help

so to the obama naysayers
i say instead of bashing the guy
or sitting back and doing nothing
how bout putting your brain where you mouth is
and trying to help the guy

regardless of whether you are democrat or republican
isn't it in all our best interests if obama succeeds in
lifting this country out of the economic toilet?

i salute the guy

Being Good

i've been thinking a lot about what it means to be a good person
a large part of my self esteem comes from feeling that i am a great human being
i give to my family
help out friends in need
give loose change to the homeless
at times i have given to the point where it does in fact hurt

i was patting myself on the back recently
after sending a check to a family member in need
when i got a call from my good pal
La Matrix
see jill matrix on my linkie love list
she has decided to donate a kidney
i thought
ok lots of people are organ donors
thats nice
but no
as it turns out
she is going to do this while she is still
alive
like way alive, aka maybe this year

so i thought ok
well its a family member in peril

but no
she is going to donate her kidney
go under major surgery
and live her life with one kidney
for

a total stranger

okay
maybe i gotta re-think this good person stuff
cause honey
this is something i could just NOT do..

well maybe it's just that I am a good person

but la Matrix
is a GREAT person

in this time of economic up-heaval

we need more great people

i guess i can try a little harder
give a little more
we all can

for now
well i sit in awe of my pal

mourning the l word

i am mourning the loss of THE L WORD
not since the demise of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER(booo hooooo)
has the loss of a show felt like ..well ..such a loss

but the L word was something else
it was the first time lesbians got to do something straight folks have done
for as long as there has been television
watch a show about us

it made me understand how it might have felt to be an african american
when the first tv shows with dark skinned faces hit the air
and not just as the best friend like on buffy
although hey still congrats for showing the story line at all josh whedon (buffy creator)

yes the L word was not realistic in the sense that all its characters
were gorgeous
well dressed
and chic
but honey
look at melrose place, desparate housewives
90201, the gossip girl
any of the soap opera ish nighttime tv shows
since dynasty

folks don't tune in to watch beer belly badly dressed losers
unless of course it's reality tv but that's another story

finally this was a show
about dykes

QUEER AS FOLK WAS FANTASTIC
AND A HUGE STEP FORWARD
but mostly about the boys...

personally i was thrilled
to see characters i could occasionally relate too
how-ever more buff (but that much more buff!)

and jennifer beales lord she must have caused more drool
on a sunday night then salty chips

so now its gone
and in its wake a void
will mainstream tv wake up
and realize that gay
does sell

or will we need to wait another decade for another show
like this one

here's hoping not

California Dreaming

I don’t pray
Accept for a few times of year during the high holidays
And the odd and spontaneous moment when something other then my brain takes over…but right now
I do feel like praying
And its odd that it is a religious right wing movement that makes me feel like praying

I feel like praying that those who would stand in the way of basic human rights will not win their victory in the name of what they feel god wants..

I have never recuperated from the terrible irony that in the election that saw a waft of people willing to stand against racism to elect America’s first African American president, proposition 8, the ban on gay marriage in California was also voted in.

Now there is a chance to do the right thing..

The cases have been heard, the candle’s lit for vigils, now we wait to see will The California Supreme Court, which last year declared the right of gays and lesbians to marry, say again that this is a constitutional right and re-peal what Sean Penn called, Shameful! Prop 8.

I do not cast stones at shadows here, my own family, a family who loves me, went to the ballads and voted for Prop 8 in the name of what they felt the lord wanted. Needless to say conversation at the dinner table is a tad strained.

To all those who fought hard to see the state’s constitution amended to declare that "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid,” I say this..what if next time it is you?

What if there comes a day when marriage between a Protestant and a Catholic is banned? Certainly some folks in Ireland might recall how laughable that is not.

What if there comes a time when a Jew and a Moslem are not allowed to marry? Certainly in a few middle-eastern countries this is hardly a joke.

What if there was a law against whites and blacks marrying? Oh right there was one, well into the latter part of the last century and we abolished the shameful law far too late but at least we did abolish it.

How does that old saying go? Oh I forget
But the jest is….first they came for the jews…and I did nothing because it wasn’t me.
Then they came for the dark skinned people and I did nothing because it wasn’t me.
Then they came for the non believers of their faith and I did nothing because it wasn’t me.
Then they came for me and there was no one left to do anything to help me. Well you know the saying went differently but you get the point.

If you go back in history would you have joined in the civil rights marches across this country or would you just sit on the side lines? Saying…not me, not my problem.

Whether or not you are gay or straight, whether or not you live in California or don’t. It is your problem, because attacks on the basic human rights of Americans cheapen what America stands for.

The lord above created us all and he/she certainly would not have created 10% of humanity as gay, if we all were not meant to live and love and be happy and respected with equality.
