Harvey Milk and the dream
i can't even remember the last time i went to see a movie
and at its end the audience broke into applause
was it years ago when this last happened?
did i dream it?
but there i sat
today
less then an hour ago
here in NYC on thankgiving weekend
when a full house of gay and straight
young and quite a few senior citizens
broke into applause
at the end of MILK
the movie about Harvey Milk starring Sean Penn
i was moved yes to tears
and even though this was 30 years ago
it felt so timely
milk fought fiercely and fearlessly
to defeat proposition 6
that would have repealed the few gay rights
there were in Califorinia in the late 70's
the proposition despite its champions
people like Anita Bryant
was defeated
here we are today
and proposition 8
sadly was not defeated
we need harvey milk today
we needed more of him
what a magical marvelous person
and portrayed
just to perfection by Sean Penn
when i walked out into the rainy
early evening
i passed a bunch of garbage
sitting against the trash was a thrown out
couch pillow
on it a local artist i believe his name is De La Vega wrote
BECOME YOUR DREAM
oh harvey surely you became your dream
and how i so much want to do the same
try to do the same
the other night
i watched CNNs tribute to heroes
everyday heroes
civilian heroes
my favorite was the nanny who has used her nanny wages
and the $10 a week she was able to collect from other nannys
to build and run a school for the lost, the cast out
children of africa
she has become her dream
i feel so moved right now
moved to walk out into this rainy night
and demand that harvey's legacy is revered and remembered
that gay rights are human rights
i feel moved to share with strangers
to take care of the loved ones i have in need
i feel moved to move you
it is thanksgiving weekend
the tail end
tomorrow is work
back to the grind
did you have a warm safe place to eat on thursday?
do you have a warm safe bed tonight?
share of yourself with some one who does not
do you live somewhere where your rights are protected?
fight for those who do not
become your dream

economic pot luck
it's just amazing how fast the economy implosion has happened
and how fast it's affected the lives of everyone around me
one loved one wondering if their home will go into foreclosure
one loved one worrying about how to pay the heating bill
friends losing their jobs
everyone tightening their belts
they say its been brewing for years
and just finally erupted
this i believe
while just about everything I can think of to say on this subject
is not good
there is one and only one thing i can think of that is good
how it brings friends and family together
pot luck dinners with close pals
instead of stuffy restaurants
as example
long walks along the water with your honey
instead of long walks in a department store
i'm doing what i can to help my loved ones
and of course to keep myself healthy flush and vibrant as well
but it surely is time to share the love you have
and whatever extra you have
with those in need
and expect the same in return
take care of yourself
be calm
be patient
be careful
and be kind
if we all take a deep breath
release the fear
and accept that we are all in this together
it will work out

SAY NO TO PROP 8
Can you feel it?
Its stonewall all over again
Its civil rights in the 60’s
Its women’s lib in the 60’s and 70’s
It’s time for America ...too lazy to wake up
To be shaken up!!
It’s time for Americans who won't move into the future
To take their anti human rights crap and shove it up their asses!
It’s time for the bigots, the homophobes, the racists, the intolerant
To either be talked into doing the right thing
Or be passed over as the wave of Glorious American humanity
Washes over them
Its time for the religious fanatics to realize
This is a whole new world
Mormons
Jews
Christians
Moslems
Today is the day that gay rights equal human rights
This country was finally able to get over its horrible racist past
And elect the first African American president
But in that same election
Stamped all over the rights of gay Americans
So today
The marches begin
All over the country in 300 cities
here in NYC!
Proposition 8 must go!
It is time for us all to understand that in the year 2008
Human rights mean rights for all humans
Not just the ones you think are good enough
Religious enough or like minded enough
today
today
today
is the beginning of the end
of homophobia in america

what happened to united for all
and as my heart flew
high
high
high into the heavens
with the victory of obama
this i take to mean that this racist
sexist
homophobic ass country
is finally ready to grow up
it now sinks
sinks sinks
as california

California Approves the Gay Marriage Ban
yep
in the same election that voters went to the polls to say
yes
it's time for an african american president
they also said
NO it's not time for gays to have the right to marry?!?!?!
FYI
im not throwing stones to far here
my own brother voted to ban gay marriage
gay-marriage banning amendments were also approved in Arizona and Florida and Arkansas approved a measure banning unmarried couples from serving as adoptive or foster parents, this clearly targeting gay americans
How can the same election that brought forth the biggest celebration
for civil rights i have ever seen
also usher in such a waft of homophobia?
California Proposition 8, the ballot measure to ban gay marriage has been passed shame
shame
shame
on you california
here's what really pisses me off
that waft of love and pride that sent black voters racing to the polls to support obama
is what probably nailed the coffin on this huge gay rights issue
oh there is nothing more sad
then someone who has been the victim of prejudice passing it on
so this post i send out to all those who voted against the rights for gay americans to marry
isn't it just time to wake up
to stop judging by the color of our skin
to stop judging by our religion
to stop judging by who we love
damn it
this is ruining my obama high
united
i finally understand the 60's
or at least more so
cause last night i felt like i was watching bobby kennedy
when obama took the stage in chicago
i have never before experienced that level of hope
promise, good will and well....massive love
as what permeated the air, the streets, the crowds across this country
and certainly all over my beloved NYC when obama stepped out to make his winner's speech
yes i am still sad about hillary not being up there
but finally and truly moved
by the amazing achievement of this 47 year old guy
who most had never heard of a few years ago
calm cool collected and empowered he stood at the podium
and i knew life was about to change
today for the first time since clinton won
i feel optimistic about this country
i feel once again
that we are a country in which
anyone can fly
anything is possible
today is the beginning of a whole new era
and i strongly agree with obama
no more red states
no more blue states
just united states
i know what it's like to have a bully throw pennies at me and say pick them up dirty jew
i know what it's like to be gay bashed.... twice
i know what it's like to be told what i'm doing a woman just can't do
more times then i can count
but i don't know what it's like to be denied a job
a home
or a chance because of my skin color
to be judged immediately before knowing anything about me
just because of my skin color
i can only imagine how it felt last night
to be a person of color
especially one old enough to remember segregation
and to be that person and watch Obama
become the next president of the united states
oh my god it's just wondrous
for me
it means
in the words of the great bob dylan
the time's they are a changing
Sunday, November 2
gay
gay marriage
i guess the closer we come to november 4th
the more i wonder
will this issue be resolved with our next president?
will there come a day when the children today
grown up
are amazed
that much like interracial marriage
gay marriage was actually not allowed
here's hoping
i went to an amazing event last night
that honored some of the great women
who made THE L WORD possible
and was moved by Jennifer Beales
and her teary eyed speech
and i just sat there and thought
WILL and GRACE
QUEER AS FOLK
THE L WORD
showing every day people our story
has done as much for gay rights
as any parade
so now
you turn on the TV
and see our story
you know us
you are our sister
brother
father mother
friend
co-worker
will you please
please
accept that we are
ALL equal
sheesh
