sorrow

Sometimes its hard not to feel like the world is coming to an end

After the killer tsunami

After watching the magical city of new Orleans literally drown

There is a horrifying killer earthquake in Indonesia

2,500 dead and counting as of this morning..

I just don’t recall this amount of horror happening in such a short amount of time ever

Am I right
Is this the most terrible stretch of cruel nature in the shortest amount of time
Or was I too young to understand when last it did?

A day before yesterday, a low flying jet wizzed by, so low that it set off a car alarm in the projects..shortly after an entire fleet of jet fighters sped by, equally low..

My heart caught in my throat and I began to panic
I looked out my window and saw the faces of other people freaking too

We were all thinking the same thing... “911” all over again..

New Yorkers don’t talk about September 11th anymore…but here especially in downtown Manhattan we feel it

Turns out it was a military weekend here in NYC and some sort of a show of power display.. I guess I should have watched CNN the night before so I’d know that..

Anyway what I’m thinking about this morning is here I am it’s 2006 and “911” comes back in a second, maybe it never left from my phsyche
and I didn’t watch a loved one die.

I didn’t see my home buried.

I didn’t suffer a wound, (unless you count having asthma ever after so hmm maybe that does count)….

How does one move on when you watch your entire family buried?

When everything you own is under ground or under water?

There but for the grace of god......I whisper...

So much sadness in the world…

I ask again was it always like this?

Enron

MY pal K was talking to me yesterday about how she was terrified that justice would not be served in the enron scandle

“I need to see those guys in orange jump suits”
She said

And I certainly have to agree

I get to add insult to injury here being someone who recently sold her 1,000 shares of Enron for (drum roll please) ….. a dollar….just for the write off..
Course I really cant cry cause I bought after things started going down the tubes, my reasoning being at such a low price as it was that day. If things turned around Id be sitting very pretty..

Now ive got a buck

Here in nyc that used to mean I could hop on the subway
Now it means I need to borrow another dollar to do so
But I digress..

So now Ken Lay has been found guilty of stock fraud…do you feel justice has been served or should he have fried for a whole lot more??

…seems to me the guy ruined thousands of lives sorta like a walking depression making stock crash….ruining that many lives, you’d almost think the guy should be up there for mass murder..

But is it right just to try the enron gang, what about all the folks in all the other companies and all the other jobs, the banks, the brokers who played ball..who made it possible for the largest scam in history to happen... these folks paid fines but none of them are on trial..

I guess I’ll have to ask you, when it comes to Enron do you think justice is being served?

the evil sports stadium

I was just reading on Tulip (check out Linky love list dears)
about the plight of Iranian women who were about to finally... after years of being banned ..be able to go to (GASP) a sporting event...

seems that moslem women being able to watch the male body in a sporting event is just a little too sexy..over there in Iran... course now the ban being lifted is under attack and the Iranian women might be kept out of the stadium after all...
but reading this gave me one of those
"there but for the grace of god" moments..

it's painful for me to watch the women i see in my own neighborhood, an influx of religious moslems that have sprouted up around the east village..
they walk thru the park with their sons in t-shirts and jeans, their husband in t-shirt in jeans while they are covered in a black veil, all but their eyes...
the last time i saw this was a sweltering humid day
but i did not shed a tear for these women in my hood
just as i dont shed a tear for the chasidic women wearing wigs and full body cover in july
because no one will stone these women if they wake up one morning and decide to wear Levi's
or well, at least, if their husband does stone them
their husband will be arrested for murder

yet in Iran
women are legally not allowed to watch sports
what would happen to the brazen female who dared to peer out
at a soccer match?
would she be gunned down?

i know its not right to generalize
and i dont condemn moslems around the world
for having so many rules that seem to outsiders to be in-humane to women
but i do comdemn any society and any country and any religion
that believes that a women who breaks the rules
deserves to be murdered
or maimed
or both

one has only to step briefly out of our own world
to know
that no
we have not come a long way baby

stuff

had myself quoted on a fun foodie site
called naughtycurry.com
go check em out
they are spicy

on other news
im still in catering hell but all brides, moms of brides, grooms and dads
are happy
so im happy too

now just 12 more weddings to go
and im off for a whole month
in ptown
to paint, write and try to remember that i am
something besides a chef-ette

sometimes when i have garlic in my finger nails for too many months in a row
i start to forget that im also supposed to be the evil great grand-daugher of
vangogh on acid
or something like that

on other news
i dont know why i was so knocked out by all those lethal gater attacks in florida
folks just walking along and suddenly getting dragged into the water by a gater
its like nature attacks big time

nature is a funny thing
you can build a shopping mall in swamp land
but you cant stop the gaters from snatching your neighbor

i remember trying to get a lazy old crocodile to eat some bread
when i was six
soon as i turned my butt
well
lets just say i almost lost my butt
my mom aged about 30 years that day

Allergy Shmallergy

when i was growing up
i thought only nerds had allergy attacks
like Felix from the odd couple
allergies where for the weak, annoying and neurotic..
as i got older it never occurred to me
that always having a tissue in my pocket, always needing one
meant that yes
i actually had allergies
it also never occurred to me that the two huge fat balls of fur that have slept with me for the past 17 years might be oh setting off a cat allergy

september 11th left sent my allergies into
a whole other stratosphere and i went on a two year long homoepathic cleanse
to try to get back to my pre 911
allergy state

these days
i pop a Claritin a few days a week
and count myself lucky that its not worse
but then you get a day
thats full of pollen
dust
cat dander
and stress
and im popping more pills then
Karen on WILL and GRACE
one things for sure

allergies are not for wimps
cause only the strong can really grativate thru all of life's hassles
while stoned on allergy pills, angry from a sinus headache, weasing from an asthma attack and tired from a sleepless night of blowing the shnoz

ive heard reports that the allergens in the air are at an all time record high
and some folks are linking it to global warming
pollution
ENRON
whatever

all i know is
that im sick of it

how are you feeling?

sigh
on lighter news

the new ceiling shining
and my empty wallet waving in the wind
i shall move on to the next challenge

immigration

i was wondering if you kids would like to weigh in
on the immigration issue
certainly after the nation-wide protests one thing is clear
11 million illegal aliens in this country are no longer willing to be ignored

i have pals who say let them all stay, give them all legal status but tighten up the borders so more dont enter
and yet most illegals come in on airplanes and just dont leave
so what don't let anyone come here in vacation anymore either?

but if let everyone stay who is illegal and just have a
if you make it in, you can stay policy
dont we ulitmately become over-run beyond all control and ultimately a country that one wants to escape not enter..

and yet there are people in this country who have lived here for years, decades who have lives, family everything here
and who very, very often do the hard cheap work, no legal american seems willing to do..
this country does not get to benefit from their hard work because they can't pay taxes..

deporting 11 million immigrants would probably destroy our economy not to mention a lot of lives..
so where is the middle ground?

i would like them all to stay,
pay taxes
vote
be a part of the system not one who hides from it

but i also wonder
how do you lay out enough ground rules to keep america from being over-populated
and yet bow to the fact that illegal workers are not going anywhere so might as well give them rights, status and take their money like you take the rest of our money
where our money goes which at the moment is to iraq is another story that i wont get into here

its the middle ground id like to hear about
do you think 11 million people should be given status?
should it only be the ones who have been here 5 years or more and can prove it?
what should new immigration laws look like?

i personally think we should make more provision in how we give visas..
it seems for most that the only way to get a visa is to have a few million bucks behind you.. how bout you can get a visa on the basis of having a family here
who loves you and needs you...call this the family visa..

we only give asylum visas to those who can really prove their lives are in danger.. how bout we give homophobia visas...to gay people from around the world who come here to live their lives in the open...maybe they cant prove that they would be killed by say the taliban...but they live somewhere where they surely would have to spend their life in the closet...like say Jamaica

anyway
just a couple ideas
im not all the way in either direction on this issue
i think im kinda in the middle
i want the illegals to be able to stay
but only if they will be good for this country
pay their taxes contribute
vote
help our economy

i dont want to see a repeat of mariel when castro dumped all his crazies and criminals on our shore and miami was destroyed for quite a while

i also think that any illegal who is given status should have rules attached...they can't go on welfare, they must contribute to the system, work pay taxes, benefit the country and return the favor of the free pass they just got

i dont think we can have great boat loads of immigrants like in the ellis island days even though immigration is the fabric of this country, and part of my own background and all of yours to some extent, because now, we have to worry about over population

but i do think we need to get that we are not going to win this
but trying to send all our illegals away
theyre here, get used to them
so find a way to have them work for us
not hide from us

so how bout you let me know your ideas
i gave you two of mine
my family visa
and homophobia visa ideas

how do we find a big compromise in all of this?
