The Big Easy
to the big easy
to bourbon street jazz
to creole
to cajun
to mississippi river boats
to beignets at dawn
to all shades, sizes, shapes of people sucking down crawfish, kicking up their heels, sending out a hearty whoop to barriers of every kind
to a place that defied geography
and absorbed the best of the cultures of spain, france, canada,
america, africa and more and spun it all together into a gumbo
with more spice, more history, more vibration that one could simply absorb in a mouthful
to the land of majestic gardens
and aligator boats
i pray for you
and miss you
i feel you
i am so sorry for your loss
and i hope
i hope
i hope
you will regain your majesty
and your magic
very soon
be well new orleans
New Awlins...and all the surrounding towns, counties
places that have been torn apart
be well
Sunday, August 28
the times they are a changing....
often my dear and most fabulous
reader, supporter and all round great guy MIKE R
those who have read my comments will know him quite well..
often
mike leaves a comment that acts as a pearl
rolling around in my head and causing me to think
this is an amazing thing
since if you think about it
in the course of your day
most folks
do not tell you anything that makes you think
and most of the time when you tell them something to make them think
it goes right over their head
or quickly out their ass
what can i say
humans can be rather
well
human
anyway
mike's last comment
was something ive been thinking about too
which is that
both extremes on the war subject dont quite work
the bush camp would have us think
that everything in iraq was just and meant to be
and done correctly and all we need to do is more of the same
KILL THE EVIL DOERS!
the extreme left camp
would have us think
that we need to sit on the floor
like GANDI
starving ourselves to death
or maybe go 60's and smoke some pot
and sing 'all we are asking is to give peace a chance'
and that will stop terror
no honey
much as i love the 60's
and think it was the most inspiring and creative anti war movement
in history
its just not the answer
didn't stop the war then
won't stop terror now
it would be nice if the answer could be
everyone just waking up
and saying lets make a better world before we destroy ours
but we all know that one day
after human beings have destroyed this planet
either by blowing it up in wars
or by the growing pollution and destruction to our environment
that we are ignoring while we are blowing each other up in wars
when there are like oh
a handful of people left on earth
they still wont get it
because
very few people think
really and truly think
not just about today
but tomorrow
not just about ego
but about the big picture
not just about the big picture
but the big picture as others see it
so heres what i think
first of all
the bush camp is a one way ticket to more terror not less
they have managed to antagonize the whole friggen
globe and at least half of this country if not more
the super leftie camp which sadly
seems to be the only camp speaking out LOUDLY
on behalf of democrats today
is a one way ticket to giving us
more Bush's in office
because moderate Republicans
and right leaning Democrats don't see a super softie as
a great alternative
and a super softie is not what we need to stamp out terror
what we need is someone with vision
a Democrat who is not afraid to go to war when needed
but who has the brains
and the self confidence to hold off when its possible
and to think things thru
and have a full plan for the aftermath of the war
before running off half cocked (no pun intended)
it is simply not
rational to think
that no war
no fighting
no guns
will stop terror
if we had gone this route
we would still have the taliban
in power
and we would be the joke of the world
but right now
we are the enemy of much of the world
and i suspect
we are doing a great service to radical islam
but helping hugely in the turning of
moderate muslims to their camp
one power doesnt work for anyone
didnt work for hitler
didn't work for napolean
ultimately you do meet that waterloo
and the baby bush doesn't seem
to get this
but history does
certainly one thing you can say about Clinton
he understood and respected history
we have to work together
as best we can
to defeat your enemy is to know your enemy
certainly we are not doing didly in this regard
because we are fueling the radical islamic movement
like wildfire
and just to show you that
in the face of this ever changing
and frightening world
i can say some full out shocking things
i will say this
i never
ever
ever thought id see the day
when i would say out loud and mean it
that arnold schwarzenegger
would be an improvement
over our present administration
but you know what........
oh just one little PS
take a look at a country
any country
any nation
in history
and look what happens the moment
that questioning your leader
no agreeing with your leader
causes you to be declared
un-patriotic
or punished
jailed
exposed
denounced
its always a red flag
was a red flag that first time someone was jailed for
not agreeing with Castro after his famous revolution that never ended
i dont agree with George W. Bush..
many of you don't
and we are not anti-american
or anti-christian
for feeling this way and speaking out
we are americans
and we are voicing our right of liberty
we have the right to freedom of speech
but honey
just the fact that most folks i know
are afraid to open their yap
kinda says a lot about the
state of this country
look at history
respect history
cause its like the old saying
hind sight is 20/20

the great DUBYA war time vacation
okay
you know what
call me crazy
but i think that yeah
when the country is at a war
you took us into
and our boys and girls are getting killed
that you should not take your ass out of the office
and have a vacation
how the hell do you think the parents of dead soldiers feel
when they open up the paper and see the baby bush smiling away on his 5 week long vacation on the ranch?!
he deserves to have anti-war demonstrators bothering the hell out of him right now
how bout he spend 5 weeks in the trenches with the young americans he sent there?!
nah
the baby bush is tired
and stressed out
he needs to ride his bicycle and play with his horses
the baby bush of course feels justified
i mean he is the president right
so he needs to feel healthy and ready for the job
and oh a nice little 5 week vacation auta do the trick
hey dubya
how bout taking a moment to think about how your boys and girls overseas feel right now?
maybe just take 2 weeks off and be oh a little bit low key about it?
would it kill you?
cause its killing them!
i just think its bag friggen taste
thats all there is to it

Farewell Queer as Folk
does anyone watch the show "Queer as Folk"
well honey I do
and ive been an addict for years
i missed the last 4 episodes
and the series finale
while in ptown
but got to watch them all in two nights
since my return
i have to say the shows creators
are just friggen brilliant
cause they sucked in (no pun intended)
a majority straight audience
by showing lots of sex
drama
and well
sex
straight women were glued to the screen to watch hot guys screw
each other
straight men
hmm well i guess that was just curiousity
or maybe to get fashion tips
but at the tale end (no pun again)
of their fifth and final year
they let it rip
with real political stuff
as their group watches their rights
and very nearly their lives
taken from them
when right wing christian conservatives
try to push thru
proposition 14
sure this was fiction
i mean in real life
gays couldn't really lose their rights to adopt
to give their partners insurance
domestic partner rights
or
could they
honey
i'd like to think that all those millions of viewers
who watched this show and enjoyed the sex and drama
and came to care about these characters
maybe also came to care about their opression
it was masterful
done the other way around
the straight viewers probably would have turned the channel
i do think shows like this
and will and grace
do far more to change the way america
views the gay community then any parade
media is power
anyway
my beloved show is over
and im glad they went out with a bang
and maybe did some good things in this uptight political environment
to further gay rights
its a scary time to be gay
its a scary time to be jewish
its a scary time to be american
its a scary time

NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED..THE GAZA
I admit I took a leave of absence from reality for a bit while on vacation which included following the Gaza withdrawal in Israel..
My views on Israel are often not shared by liberal Democrat friends
My views on Bush are not shared by my right wing readers who OFTEN like my views on Israel
No matter they are my views
So sue me
Took some time to read Ocean Guy who is on my linkie love list dears
And who is not someone I agree with on everything..but I did agree with a lot of what he had to say about the Gaza withdrawal..
I guess I too kinda think its gonna be like the old
“No good deed goes un-punished”
Israel pulls out of the Gaza pushed its own people from their homes in order to have peace with the Palestinians
And then what
How many minutes or seconds will elapse before the Palestinians move into the Gaza and then want more and the blood shed starts all over again
Only with there being less of Israel then before..
We sit here in America and think that a Palestinian state is the only just way to go
Except over there you have Palestinians leaders who are saying
Yes give us that
And then we will come after the rest
From Ocean Guy
We have this little ditty on the subject
**
Says Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal: ["The Gaza withdrawal] is the beginning of the end for the Zionist program in the region."
Says Hamas leader in Gaza Mahmud Zahar: "This army will continue to defend our homeland as long as one inch of Palestine remains occupied."
Giving the Arabs such a huge victory while not getting even a day of peace in return, makes no sense for Israel's long term security situation.
The signal of weakness being sent to the Arabs will only invite more terror. Showing the PLO and Hamas that suicide bombers are effective, will only invite more of them. And what happens then?
**
Thanks Ocean Guy…
So what is the answer
If Israel does not give the Palestinians their state they are branded as tyrants world wide and the world says yes you deserve to be murdered..you are oppressing a people
Never mind that these are predominantly the people who were thrown out by Jordan who don’t seem to get bombed much anymore since as Gus pointed out when the suicide bombers started on Jordon ….Jordon responded by killing their extended families..
Tough to bomb a country that works that way
But Israel
no Israel is the democracy
The country that has arabs in the Knesset
Who gives more rights to its Arab citizens (BY FAR) then they would have in the countries of their origin
But Israel is never right
If they don’t give the Palestinian state
They are dictators
If they do
They are a bit smaller
A bit weaker
And ripe for more picking
There is no right decision
So Israel is giving back the Gaza
Israel once again is doing the right thing
The good thing
The nice guy thing
Without even a moments peace as their reward
Shall I take this post up again
The moment we read about a school bus filled with Jewish children
Blown up
AFTER
There is a Palestinian State?
The celebrations are beginning…a huge achievement for Arabs everywhere for suicide bombers for terrorists for Islamic fundamentalists
And hopefully
We must say hopefully
For the peace loving people of Palestine too
Jews are once again leaving their home
Heads hung
Having to start over
A familiar
All too familiar image to
Jews around the world
A high price to pay
But will it
Will it
Will it
Buy peace
History
Tells us
Don’t bet on it

September 11th Revisited
Last week while I was sitting on the deck of The Red Inn having a glass of Sauvignon Blanc waiting for the sun to set, two men sitting next to me started a conversation with me.
Turns out we were all New Yorkers…somehow in between the comparisons of the best food in town, the way the boats look just before sunset and how fabulous the deck at The Red Inn was, our talk turned to September 11th.
Maybe it’s because the anniversary is coming up, maybe it’s a right of passage that New Yorkers do when they meet up in an outside town, maybe its because one of the guys works on Wall Street, but all of a sudden in front of all that beauty the three of us were transported to that terrible day.
The Wall Street man’s building had the windows sucked out. He was late for work that day, thank god, but stood below watching the people jump. His lover did not know until later that day whether or not he was okay.
In an instant I was in the midst of one of the most lasting memories I have, almost as intense as watching that first tower fall and that is the dust, the thick wall of floating debris that turned ground zero and the surrounding area into an eerie place that was hard to describe to anyone who had not been there.
It was strangely peaceful in the sickest possible way. It muffled the noise like falling snow. It felt like walking through a quiet snowstorm and yet you knew that some of what was falling on you were what was left of lost lives. The sick peace of it reminded me of what someone once told me it felt like to freeze to death.
“You get really sleepy at first and kinda peaceful…then you feel warm and not cold.”
I will never forget my first day at ground zero walking through the wall of dust finding the etching in the dust made by the loved ones of those lost…
”Johnny we are looking for you”
“They may take our buildings but they will never get our souls”
This morning I turned on my laptop and found the news showing the just released footage of the firefighters from that terrible day, 15 hours of radio transmissions and 500 oral histories that have just now been made public.
There are the descriptions you have heard, how everything turned black and filled with screams.
There two are personal stories like the fireman who realized the objects falling were people and turned away so as not to violate their last private moment and decision.
Here we are approaching another anniversary of this terrible day. Few people I know talk about it anymore except on the anniversary. Or when something newsworthy on the subject comes up from it.
But we are all changed from this terrible day.
I asked a close friend of mine if she felt that I had changed from that terrible September and she said, “Completely…but it is mostly for the better.”
Mostly…
I do like to think that I have become kinder, more willing to talk, to listen, to work things out before starting a fight.
I like to think that now…I understand the need for peace more then ever.
I just wish our president had changed in this way too….

peace of art
well all my pals have left the cape
so im having a few quiet days to myself
to paint
write
and reflect
which
umm
was kinda why i came out here
more and more
NYC
has become the fast paced city
i turn into business mama in
and ptown
is where i go to remember that im a writer/painter
tis okay
at least i go
art is an amazing thing
i had a long talk with a wonderful artist in town
who owns his own gallery
a great guy named Tom
i dont know kids
but this guy seems to really be doing this thing called
LIFE
right
he's peaceful
his paintings are serene
his gallery is lovely
he spends half the year in italy
and half in ptown
i throws himself in the ocean at least once a day
and just doesn't have a bad word to say about anybody
i had a few long conversations with him
and ran back to my little porch
and painted while sail boats
on a purple baby
better then acid baby
sigh
i will be back home soon
and then its a mountain of meetings
and the stress of cooking for hundreds for weddings guests
and fighting with vendors
bitchy clients
paper work
but for now
there is the purple
and the blue
and the opal
and the white pearl
and the lovely pink in the sky at 6:00
and the world looks quite a bit like a canvas
peace out

The Emperor's New Clothes
Well you must admit I’ve held true to my promise and not bashed the bush
The DUBYA kind not the good kind for well over a week…
Honey it has been hard to keep this mouth shut
But I have
So send money and margaritas if you’re impressed
Meanwhile
I took part in a lovely soiree on the shared deck
I have here with Liz and Debbie the dynamic duo
Claire, Mira, Dianne and Maureen came
All smart
Feisty
Outspoken babes
With an ax to grind
Always a good combo
We all got talking about politics
We’re all liberal democrats
NATCH
But we all felt rather disappointed with our party
And we all felt a strong, horrifying fear that we might get saddled with yet another bush in office
So whats the deal with the dems?
Whats the deal with the moderate republicans?
It seems like everyone is so afraid
With this boy that if they speak out against him
They get lynched
Or their spouse gets outed as a CIA agent
Or they get sent off to the burbs to retire peacefully and QUIETLY
Its like a nationwide case of the emperors new clothes
Everyone is afraid to be the first one to point out and say
The president is naked!
Where is that brave democrat who will rise up and scream
This dude’s got no clothes on!!!
Well the problem is just what happens next
Are we bravely rallying around this person?
Are we opening our eyes and looking too?
NO!
Cause now Americans are afraid of not only being called anti American if they speak out against the baby bush
But they’re afraid of being called anti-Christian too..
Masterfully done…I must say..
Well... I’m still calling out the dems…
Come on Dems!
You’ve got moderate Republicans all over this country who are fed up.
You’ve got Democrats who need a face they can believe in.
Is it time for a real third party?
Honey maybe it’s time for a real third party.
Either that…..or maybe the only third that’s gonna happen around here
Is a third world war.
