the king is dead, long live the king

Being in Provincetown
I have been taking a well-needed break
From news, New York and nagging

But today I was plunged back into reality
Or well really an altered state
When I watched the Michael Jackson memorial
At the home of my good pals S and D
thanks S and D!

You know some of it was a bit over the top

But then the king of pop was just that over the top
He was bigger, better, badder and bolder

Since Michael Jackson died
I have been shocked by the level of love pouring out over him
And saddened by the simple thought
Were was all this love a day before June 25th 2009?

Like one of his heroes and one of mine, Elvis
Michael was embroiled in controversy, ridicule and paranoia
He became someone who had to hide from the world rather then roll in the embrace of the world
And yes he did become eccentric, weird, strange, odd choose the word you prefer if any

But today as I was watching the outpouring of love for him
I was struck with the range of people who had adored him, all sizes and shapes and colors and countries..

It also occurred to me that people who were probably heroes to many, maybe to millions
Called him a hero, called him a friend, loved him, people like
Brooke Shields, Al Sharpton, Elizabeth Taylor, Smokey Robinson, Magic Johnson,
Diana Ross, Madonna,

I was, one of the very, very, few people who was not a fan of Michael Jackson’s music or dance. Oh don’t get me wrong I loved the Jackson Five but by the time Michael was going solo in the early 80’s, I had fully embraced first hard rock, then punk rock, then new wave. After the slam dance of the sex pistols, I had little patience for the moonwalk, but that doesn’t mean I did not appreciate his brilliance.

Today as I watched his memorial I thought
It didn’t matter what he had meant to me personally, what mattered was what he had meant to the world. He had broken color barriers; he had given, given and then given some more to help countless charities. He had provided the music and the dance for more then one generation to rejoice in, to come of age in.

I don’t know what the truth is about the child molestation allegations against Michael, neither do you. Innocent until proven guilty I think should be the motto here.

My personal opinion is that Michael had lost his childhood and for that reason and others we don’t know was something of a child himself, a Peter Pan and that he loved to be around boys his own age, probably 13 and probably played with them like a 13 year old boy would and this seemed wrong to outsiders. That’s my opinion and who cares what I think really because I don’t know and neither do you.

What I do know is that millions and millions of people around the world cried today and danced to his music and sang his songs.

In the last minutes of the memorial when the Jackson family was on stage, his daughter spoke publicly for the first time and said simply that her daddy was the best father in the world and when she cried so did I and so did I’m sure millions of others..in that moment it really didn’t matter all the iconic greatness, he was just a daddy and a son and a brother and a friend and now he is gone too soon.

So I add my two cents to the trillions of others and say simply
Michael you were not my hero but clearly you were hero to millions
And for this and for your good samaritan work, I thank you and hope you find the peace in death that you did not seem to have in life.

oh one other bit of my two cents here
I think all the dancers, singers, musicians and crew who had rehearsed their hearts out and where just about to go on the tour of their lifetime with jacksons comeback tour should still tour
i think the show should go on

only with Janet and the jackson brothers taking his place,

just a thought

oh and one last thought
i do wish jackson had lived to do this last tour
that, i must admit i would have liked to have seen
i like a comeback
and for the record
i am happy for britney spears

it also would have given farrah a chance to be mourned
it saddens me that her death was so over-shadowed
but then we blondes do stick up for each other

ok that's really all my two cents
now
all i have left are quarters
