united

i finally understand the 60's
or at least more so
cause last night i felt like i was watching bobby kennedy
when obama took the stage in chicago

i have never before experienced that level of hope
promise, good will and well....massive love

as what permeated the air, the streets, the crowds across this country
and certainly all over my beloved NYC when obama stepped out to make his winner's speech
yes i am still sad about hillary not being up there
but finally and truly moved
by the amazing achievement of this 47 year old guy
who most had never heard of a few years ago
calm cool collected and empowered he stood at the podium
and i knew life was about to change

today for the first time since clinton won
i feel optimistic about this country
i feel once again
that we are a country in which
anyone can fly
anything is possible

today is the beginning of a whole new era
and i strongly agree with obama

no more red states
no more blue states
just united states

i know what it's like to have a bully throw pennies at me and say pick them up dirty jew
i know what it's like to be gay bashed.... twice
i know what it's like to be told what i'm doing a woman just can't do
more times then i can count

but i don't know what it's like to be denied a job
a home
or a chance because of my skin color
to be judged immediately before knowing anything about me
just because of my skin color

i can only imagine how it felt last night
to be a person of color
especially one old enough to remember segregation
and to be that person and watch Obama
become the next president of the united states
oh my god it's just wondrous

for me
it means
in the words of the great bob dylan

the time's they are a changing
