Monday, July 17 To Breed Is Human to Drag Divine
JR mentioned an article in the Boston Globe about a new intolerance in Provincetown and asked me for the low down.. So here goes JR...thanks for asking… Rick Hines who publishes the weekly in town The Provincetown Magazine, evidently told a woman named Cabrall who owns the tourist trolley that gives tours around town that she was a bigot. Cabrall was one of a few people who sent out a petition to stop gay marriage.. Now first of all, I have to say that anyone who makes their livelihood giving tours of Provincetown is pretty damn lame if they also want to stop gay marriage. One would think the lady in question should move to a red state where she’d be much happier. But ya know those gays coming to town to get married do spend a whole lotta money on trolley rides I also think this was a typical Ptown overblown thing. Hines yelled at the lady and she ran out and called the cobs. This led to a whole bunch of straight folks saying they are being harassed by gays. On my end, I’ve been going thru something I never in 15 years have experienced in this gay gay town; straight guys driving by on bikes... in cars and hitting on me, A LOT! like 10 times in the last week. Hey its not like I cant handle being hit on by guys, but in Ptown I sure don’t expect it. The 4th of July was about the ugliest weekend I’ve ever seen here, with police on horseback to protect the town. The cops were scared since at last years July 4th a riot broke out between cops and drunken straight teens.. So you might have some gays in town kinda thinking what the hell are these straight folks turning our town into. And of course, you have some straights in town thinking, what the hell are these queers parading around about. So yes, I have felt the tension and really hope it was just limited to the 4th of July. The amazing thing about Ptown is not that it’s a gay town, or a straight town, or an artist's town or a nature buff's town or a writer's town, but that its all of those things; blue haired old ladies, next to drag queens, next to painters. I do hope all this blows away soon. And by the way a word to the beer drinking straight college boys who have been blowing into town lately… “If you see a woman walking down the street and you think she’s hot…maybe take a tip from me. If she’s gay, she is only gonna be annoyed by you hooting at her and trust me, if she’s straight, she’s gonna be just as annoyed, because regardless of sexual orientation, that shit doesn’t work on anybody!”
