watched the last part of "Super Size Me" last night
the documentary about the guy who ate Mcdonalds three meals a day for 30 days and gained 25 pounds, like tripled his cholesteral and basically made himself totally and completely ill..
it was pretty scary to see what 30 days of Micky Dee's could do to a person
and yeah, most folks don't eat fast food like Mcdonalds three meals a day
but a whole lotta people eat it every day..
fast food is a large part of whats wrong with this country
the growing trends towards obesity especially in kids
lack of energy
lack of enthousiasm
how can you muster up the energy to follow your dream when
you're feeling tired from a sugar crash down
following your Mac Attack..
the amount of sugar in this stuff was what shocked me the most
...
or maybe not
i remember the first time i had a big Mac
what got me was the burning on my tongue
and the falling crashing feeling afterwards
it was familiar
i knew it from a lifetime of
not handling sugar too well
its how i feel after i eat something super sweet
like a slice of cake
but from a burger?
who knew?
it has also seemed apparent to me
and maybe to you too
that fast food
like Mcdonalds
Burger King
and the like
is marketed like the new soul food
pushed heavily towards african americans
heavily towards the impoverished
its like the message is
if the going gets you down
get down on this burger
it will pick you up
and help you out
make you smile
make sports heroes sit next to you
make rap stars sing in the background..
but really its
making you sick and fat
and maybe
giving you diabetes
i've learned a lot about food in the last few years
some of my longer term readers may recall
that i embarked on a two year long homeopathic
regime to try and cure me of the allergies and asthma
i came down with after "911"
and it well mostly worked
got rid of maybe 70% of my problems
but what i learned was that
really
almost all the physical woes that befall us
can be cured with diet
i suffered from allergies
largely because i was over-dosed with air-born crapola
on ground zero
but i was unable to fight those allergies
because my immune system was in the toilet
and
my immune system was in the toilet
because of eating
on the run
typical high stress new yorker..
not only was i eating badly
but i was eating so fast
that i couldn't digest my food
a major double whammy
slowing down
eating healthy
using proper food combining
(no meat and starch together)
got my immune system up
and my allergies down
i look at the kids on my block a lot
most of them are from the projects down the street
a good half of the kids i see are overweight
some extremely so
there's one kid on my block
whos about 7 years old
and already a good 50 pounds overweight
he can't run
he stays away from the other kids
cause they make fun of him
the pain
the stigmas
that will carry thru for the rest of his life
are already deeply imbedded
i feel sorry for this kid
but honey
you don't want to step between him
and his Mcnuggets
thats just about the only time i see him smile
sad
really sad
love out of a bag of chicken mcnuggets
i don't know what the answer is
but i do know
its not between two sesame seed buns
