Save the Senate

Okay..now I am not and will not pretend to be a major political brainiac.. like some of my readers…
I’m just a New York gal who sees things happening that she doesn’t feel comfortable with in her country, and, for that matter in her world..

So Bush lovers
How bout you chill on the nasty backlash for a bit and let me get my point across here…and if you want to comment
Take a deep breath and do so with some amount of respect..

So like I was saying, even a tough blonde chickita like myself can feel frightened at the prospect of any one political group taking on absolute power in this country…and honeys….that would mean democrats too..

Actually in today’s heated climate I think the only way to really know whether or not what you are ranting about is just is to put the shoe (or boot or pump..or umm sneaker) on the other foot…

I think the second any political power becomes THE political party…we lose what America is all about and start rapidly heading towards something that no longer feels like a democracy.

With this in mind…I feel scared out of my wazoo about what is going on in the Senate right now.

Republicans, not just satisfied with being a majority are trying to erode one of the most important powers left to the minority by silencing them on the floor, but stopping the filibuster, so they can push thru their own judicial nominees.

Once the pesky democrats are shut up, Bush’s nominees will have clear sailing to take on their lifetime posts on the bench.

By losing the filibuster, we as Americans lose the knowledge that the minority has a voice too.

The “nuclear option” or as Bush would say “NUCULAR” option proposed by Senator Frist would target the Senate Filibuster. This is an essential tool that allows a minority party to prevent a narrow majority from truly abusing its “might makes right” power.

Frist only needs 50 senate votes plus the tie-breaker from Cheney and he’s on his way to putting an end to a 200 year old tradition that was one of the great things about the Senate.

Basically in order to stop this, it’s not democrats in the senate that need to be targeted but at least six courageous Republicans; Republicans willing to stand against their own party, to risk possible career suicide to do what’s right.

Here’s hoping…there are at least 6 Republican senators who remember what it felt like to be a moderate Republican, surrounded by like-minded peers.

Here’s hoping there are at least 6 Republican senators…who love their country more then their party.

Here's hoping...
