well kids
tomorrow this little blonde mamasita
is off to Provincetown Mass for a week of
finding her inner writer child
what you never heard of going off to a summer beach resort
at the very tip of a cape
in mid November??!!
honey
thats when the real Ptown comes alive for me
the tourists are gone
the tea dances no more
the wild drag queens hibernating or in love or both
and what is left
is the bay
the ocean
the galleries
the year-rounders who are a very electic and assorted bunch of interesting folks
and more then a few drunken lonely souls
oh yeah
and folks like me who are sitting on the end of a dock bundled up under blankets
writing their novels
Provincetown to me
is so much what I wish the rest of this country could be
a truly integrated community
filled with gay and straight people working and living side by side
in peace and harmony
its filled with amazing culture.. Artists have flocked to this little town
and called it home and inspiration for a hundred years now.
I think it's the natural beauty of Provincetown
and the great love and appreciation for art
that has allowed a Portugese community based on old world values,
a New England Community based in fairly puritan ways, a bohemian community of artists and writers and a great influx of gay men and women of all assorted sizes, shapes, occupations and backgrounds to blend so magically.
When people unite to appreciate beauty amazing bridges are created that can connect the most opposite of folks.
Thats what I love about Provincetown...its countless cultural bridges.
Its a time of such huge division in this country and Provincetown, perhaps more then most towns feels a great sadness over the outcome of the election.
This is a town, after all, that opened its homes, its heart and its very core to gay marriage.
So I journey to my beloved Ptown tomorrow with some sadness but perhaps, more then that with some hope, that perhaps this tiny little oasis might someday be more of a role model for how this country could be
should it ever decide to put away its differences, and connect over a greater
need to love and appreciate beauty.
