Talk amongst yourselves I am too busy listening to Barbara Streisand Sing!
I have experienced very few wonders in my life more glorious then spending an evening with Barbara Streisand.
In front of a packed house, the security guard said 18,000 people! In the brand new Barclay Center, Barbara got to come home, at long last, to Brooklyn!
On Friday Night, October 12th 2012, I got to see her do it!
With my darling gf, who I think was not nearly as big a Barbara fan before the concert as she was so clearly after, we watched probably the most beloved entertainer of our lifetimes show just exactly what it is that makes ‘Babs” so special.
First of all, getting out on stage in front of 18000 people, not for the faint of heart!
Bab’s had a cold, we knew this, early on because she was sipping chicken soup on stage and because he famous pipes had a touch of rasp in them, which honestly, sounded kinda sexy to me.
Long time fans, like myself know the story, of how she fumbled the words at a concert in the 60’s and went on to have stage fright and not perform for decades. I heard it was Donna Karen and Liza Minnelli that talked her into it and thank god they did!
Bab’s has given precious few concerts since the 1960′s. She said only 81 since 1963! So catching one is like grabbing the gold ring!
I have wanted to see Bab’s live for decades and never was able to, so when I got wind about Barbara coming to the Barclay Center, I made a point to snag tickets months and months ahead of time and paid more money, than I ever have for tickets to anything except a flight!
Thankfully she did not have an opening act, but came out on stage mercifully after only about a half hour or so of waiting. At 70 years old, she looked as gorgeous and as glamorous as ever and effortlessly bantered with the crowd as she wove in and out of some of her greatest like “Memories” and “People” and some of her less known ones. She even brought her son Jason Gould out on stage to sing with her and who the hell knew Jason could sing?! Okay he can’t even shine a candle to his mom, but the buy could hold a note certainly.
There was a moment that night, when I felt like my heart might just burst, my joy and the waft of joy and love around was immense. This was one of those moments, a once-in-a-lifetime concert.
An older co-worker of mine said she’d had a night like that watching Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall in 1965 and I’d have to say Judy is probably the only woman that can compare to Barbara.
Granted it felt like most of the 18,000 people at the center where Jewish women over 50, (honey I have never seen such a long line at the bathroom!) but it didn’t matter because Barbara is timeless.
I have loved this woman since I was 8 years old. I grew up watching “Funny girl” and “Hello Dolly” and singing along with Bab’s. Later on I watched “A Star is born” and thought yes, yes, yes only Barbara could take Judy’s place. I saw Yentyl in the movie theatre and rode right on that ship with Barbara to America.
And like many of you, of course, was moved by “Prince of Tides.”
But it’s Barbara herself, not her movies that I have loved all these years.
The nice Jewish girl from Brooklyn, who never fixed her nose, never changed her personality, the ugly duckling that we all thought was beautiful with the voice, few if anyone can compare too. The un-mistakable Barbara Streisand Voice!
Yes, I am a fan, a life-long fan and now that fan’s dream has come true, I finally, at long last, I got to see Bab’s perform live and my darlings, my dears; It was like butta!!!!!
